Growing Solutions: A Social Marketing Approach to Food Gardening in Iowa
Join us for a Webinar on February 28 (2013)
A key component of maintaining the wellbeing of Iowans, and the communities in which they live, is regular access to safe, nutritious and affordable food throughout life. Yet, hunger, food insecurity and poor diet continue to deteriorate the health of Iowans. One solution to this health crisis is to encourage all Iowans to grow some of their own food. The Iowa Food Gardening Social Marketing Initiative aims to encourage low-resource Iowans to engage in food gardening activities, and encourage gardeners to plant and/or pick extra vegetables and fruit to donate to a food pantry or food bank in their community.
This webinar will describe a socio-ecological approach to assess the linkages between individuals, households, organizations, communities and public policy and the impact that food gardening may have on food access, household food security, health, economic, environmental and social issues. Dr. Danforth Richey will highlight the findings of the mixed-methods needs assessment of stakeholder perspectives on food gardening and produce donation and how this data were triangulated to create a grounded theory social marketing campaign and programming supports to promote garden produce access among low-resource Iowans.
The new report “Iowa Food Gardening Social Marketing Initiative Assessment Executive Summary” can be accessed at http://iowafoodsystemscouncil.org/food-gardening/.
In addition to the highlights of the research, webinar participants will get a sneak peak of the dynamic food gardening messages and materials being developed and scheduled for release in April 2013.
